Our main ingredient - Single Origin Cocoa
At Quirky Chocolate it's extremely important to us that our main ingredient is sourced from a supplier who can not only deliver exceptionally good quality cocoa, but is also closely aligned to our company ethos and values. The more we have looked into the cocoa industry, the more we have been convinced that buying single origin (where we know exactly how and where it is made) is the way forward. In 2024 we moved to a new Columbian cocoa supplier, Luker Chocolate. A family-owned business crafting fine chocolates and cocoa at the origin, they are known for their exceptional taste and purpose.
Fino De Aroma Classification
All of Luker's cocoa has the highly coveted Fino De Aroma Classification with flavour profiles matched by only 8% of the worlds’ cocoa growers. The unique flavour profile begins with the seed which is nurtured by the climate, the composition of the soil, the region it’s grown and how the farmer works the land and his crop.
Fully Traceable from Bean to Bar
The quality of the cocoa continues with the love and care put into the drying, roasting and the conching of the beans. Once made into couverture (all in Columbia), it's shipped directly to us in Edinburgh. No middle man. Just fully traceable cocoa every step of the way - from bean to bar. Just to be clear, we do not claim to be bean to bar chocolatiers. We're delighted for Luker chocolate to conch the beans in Columbia and supply us with the high quality cocoa coverture all ready for us to work with. First we start by tempering the coverture, then the fun begins adding delicious ingredients and flavour combinations before moulding into bars and chocolates in our artisan chocolate factory in Edinburgh, Scotland.
B Corp Certification
Luker Chocolate is proudly B-Corp Certified. If you have not come across the term B-Corp Certification before, let us explain. B Corp is a movement to transform the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet. B Corp Certification challenges companies to meet these values. To achieve certification, the company is scored on meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving, to supply chain practices and input materials.
The Chocolate Dream
Luker Chocolate's sustainability initiative, The Chocolate Dream, is dedicated to enhancing well-being, protecting the environment, and increasing the income of producers and communities who grow the cocoa. With a focus especially on safeguarding children, women, and young people across Colombia.
Ingredients sourcing
As a rule, we put Scotland first when sourcing our ingredients. From Scottish raspberries, blackberries and honeyberries to heather honey, roasted Highland coffee beans and locally made Scottish Tablet, this is our first port of call. We do this to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as supporting other Scottish businesses whenever we can. If we need to source ingredients from further afield, we go through reputable ingredient suppliers who can meet our Salsa supplier criteria.
